The Music of Duke Ellington
Revisiting the Glamour of 1940's Sophisticated Swing
SOPHISTICATED LADIES is a treasure trove of Duke Ellington’ s musical riches that won two Tony Awards, brought fame to Gregory Hines and is still one of the greatest vehicles for tap, song and The Duke’s sophisticated jazz.
The musical legacy of Duke Ellington ~ considered amongst the world’s greatest composers and musicians ~ is celebrated in this stylish and brassy retrospective that has taken audiences and critics alike by storm throughout the world. SOPHISTICATED LADIES is a glorious recreation of the Duke Ellington big band sound, featuring his most famous numbers from the infamous Speak Easy era of the Cotton Club, the Harlem Renaissance, art deco and high society, including: "It Don't Mean a Thing, If It Ain't Got That Swing", "Take the 'A' Train", "Satin Doll" and the haunting "In a Sentimental Mood".
Songs are accompanied by a jazz band led by Darius Frowner with dance numbers performed by top New York tap dancers and produced by Irving Street Rep who brought us their production of AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’. Irving Street Rep’s production infuses the show with a swanky, 1940s style and demonstrates that Ellington’s music still really "swings" today.
